Horto Girassol studio created a tropical landscape, which mixes tall, medium and short plants of different species with vegetables.
Landscape architect Maira Duarte, of the firm Sunflower gardenwas hired by the couple who own this Duplex penthouse of 425 m2in Alto Leblon (RJ), when the interior design, designed by architects Arthur Falcão and Alessandro Sartore, was being finalized.
“When I arrived on the roof there were already some plants, but nothing that reflected the identity of the residents and what they wanted in the garden: lots of flowers throughout the year, occasional colours, a complete vegetable garden with many spices and fruit to attract birds and butterflies“, says Maira. “We changed everything so that the landscaping complemented the existing architecture, mixing tall, medium and short plants of different species with greens to create a welcoming atmosphere, with natural aromas that bring different sensations,” he adds.

According to Maira, the idea of the project aimed to create a landscape in tropical style through many textures, large, dense foliage. “It is the style that best suits the Atlantic Forest and has more to do with the soul of Rio. We always look for inspiration in the local nature to make the architecture more welcoming and intimate”, explains Maira, who also specified some pieces that come from the outdoor area, such as the furniture by Way Garden, the vases by Organne, the Maresias lamp and the Monalisa armchair, with a high back, woven in black nautical rope.

In general, the greenery is present not only in the external area of 120 m2, around the swimming pool (facing the native forest), but also on the balcony of the gym (where there is a part of the vegetable garden, planted in pots) and in some rooms are internal spaces, such as the rooms on the two floors and the office.

Among the plant species used in the project, Maira highlights the spices present in the vegetable garden area and throughout the garden, the Palma Laca (elegant and with a red trunk) in the garden of the interior and exterior rooms, a large amount of philodendron in all rooms to create volume and structure, various hanging paps, as well as lots of tropical forest greenery, with emphasis on heliconia, alpinia, cigar arrowroot and tree dracaenae.

The project also has a automatic irrigation system, activated by an application via Bluetooth, which allows you to control the quantity of water based on the species, sunshine and seasons. “This technology is extremely important, especially in the case of vegetable gardens and vertical vegetable gardens, as it offers residents complete freedom to move around for as long as they want, even for long periods,” emphasizes the landscape designer.
