by Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick absolutely killed him at the box office , and there’s a certain shirtless beach scene that may have contributed to its success. (I mean, a lot of fans still are drooling over Miles Teller and company in the viral scene .) Dissident Star Lewis Pullman has now shed some light on the cast formation for the sequence, in which he wasn’t really shirtless. He also recalled the time he heard co-star Glen Powell whisper a hilarious mantra to himself.
Lewis Pullman plays Lieutenant “Bob” Floyd in the recently released blockbuster, and his character is a little different from the fighter jet pilots we see in the film. He’s a little more reserved and honestly a little bit nerdy. Some may have speculated that Bob’s personality may have influenced the creative decision to let the character keep his shirt during the beach soccer match. And in an interview with American weekly Pullman explained that it was actually why he didn’t think it would be like Floyd taking off his shirt. During the chat, Pullman went into more detail about Bob’s mood regarding the scene. Here he is with the same words as him:
The entire cast was going through some serious momentum battles to prepare for this scene. Everyone was training like crazy. I was playing Bob, who is more of a library dweller. I thought, you know, I think it would be a little disconcerting if Bob takes off his shirt and it’s a little ripped. I also think Bob wouldn’t take his shirt off. I think it might be a little embarrassing for him. I think he’s a bit more reserved and quiet guy. He likes to see how things go before actually getting into a situation. And so I was one of the few people he didn’t really impress.
we already know Tom Cruise put the cast of Top Gun: Maverick through the dish drainer in preparation for their tasks. Apparently, however, Cruise didn’t need to encourage them to do this smashing ass before their shirtless beach soccer scene because the burden of looking good on stage was enough pressure to force them to act.
In the same interview, Lewis Pullman recalled hearing Glen Powell, who plays the hangman in the film, sing something to himself in a low voice while exercising. (You have to find your own intrinsic source of motivation for things like that, right?) And it’s hard not to laugh just thinking about this saying:
I mean, I would go to the gym just for the camaraderie. Infamous, Glen Powell once flew sideways and whispered to himself very loudly. And I was like, ‘Glen, what are you saying?’ It was like “Editing lasts forever”.
Honestly, this seems like the perfect time for the meta-film, and I’d kill for an extended version of that montage in a director’s montage. More realistically, the very real moment shows how much pressure the stars went through to look their best in a scene that turned out to be quite iconic. So kudos to them for getting engaged. Now I wouldn’t be surprised if the scene didn’t live free best gun fans for years, just like the infamous volleyball scene from the original film has.
Indeed, a review the original best gun movie it’s almost a necessity before or after seeing Dissident (one of the biggest cinematic novelties of 2022), if not to enjoy the scene shirtless, simply to make a comparison. Yes, definitely not for oiled abs and shirtless beach scenes.
