The taxation of international purchases up to 50 dollars, which affects Asian sites such as Shein and Shopee, is defended by the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira
BRASILIA – The president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Thursday the 23rd that the federal government’s tendency is to veto Taxation for international purchases up to US$50, but is open to negotiating on the matter. The measure was included in the bill regulating the Green Mobility and Innovation (Mover) Programme, which provides incentives for the automotive sector. According to Lula, a meeting with the President of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), the intervention on the topic was not foreseen, but is available.
“The tendency is that of veto, but the tendency could also be that of negotiation,” Lula told journalists this morning. “We have to try to find a way to not try to help some while hurting others and do something uniform. We are willing to negotiate and find a way out.”
The tax on international purchases up to 50 dollars, which affects Asian sites such as Shein and Shopee, is defended by the president of the Chamber. The expectation is that PT and PL will try to overturn the measure through highlights after the vote on the main text of the Mover.
The statement by the PT deputy occurred while Lula was waiting for the arrival of the president of Benin, Patrice Talon, at the Palácio do Planalto, for a bilateral meeting.
According to the Brazilian chief executive, a meeting with Lira is not scheduled for this Thursday. “But if he wants to talk, after (the Benin president’s agenda), I am available,” he said.
Although he said he was open to negotiation, the PT member said he didn’t know if he would accept another salary. “Who buys these things? They are women, mostly young, and they have a lot of trinkets. I don’t even know if these trinkets compete with Brazilian things, I don’t know,” he commented. “How will you banish the poor, the girls and young women who want to buy a trinket, a hair business?”
Lula said he had discussed the issue with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, who is also Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (MDIC). “When I talked about it, I talked to Alckmin: my wife buys, your wife buys, your daughter buys, everyone buys, Lira’s daughter buys. So we have to try to find a way to not try to help some while hurting others and do something uniform.”
As demonstrated by Station/Broadcastthe head of government in the Chamber, José Guimarães (PT-CE), sent a message on the afternoon of this Wednesday 22nd, to inform the deputies of the base that Lula has taken a position against the end of the exemption for international purchases of up to 50 dollars. The measure was supposed to be voted on yesterday, which did not happen.
“Dear friends, I inform you that the government’s priority in today’s (Wednesday) plenary session is the vote and approval of the Mover PL (PL 914/2024). I also inform you that President Lula has instructed me to vote against the taxation of purchases of international payments up to $50 via e-commerce,” reads the message sent by Guimarães to WhatsApp groups, obtained by the report.
