It is quite dark.
Spoilers for The Boys season 3 below.
‘TheBoys’ (Amazon Prime Video) just screwed up A-Train with his latest story and we’re not 100% sure he deserves it.
There’s no way A-Train (Jessie T Usher) is a good guy. In fact, the things he has done are so despicable that would make the hairs on your toes bristle. ‘The Boys’, one of the best action series, began with the insensitive and careless death of Hughie’s girlfriendRobin (Jess Salgueiro), which he later laughed at, and built up as the seasons went on.
The murder of his girlfriend Popclaw (Brittany Allen) who, it should be noted, passed off a drug overdose, ranks high in that pile.
Not to mention the time delivered to Supersonic (Miles Gaston Villanueva) to The Patriot for conspiring with Starlight (Erin Moriarty). He did this knowing that the super homicidal would kill Supersonic, but hey, anything to get a leg up on Vought, right?
not a good guy. And as Vought’s boss, Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie), is kind enough to remind you, “she’s spent over 100 hours in crisis management meetings specifically thinking about how to cover up her bullshit.” That includes the three “direct murders” of hers.
However, in the world of ‘The Boys’, A-Train is not the worst: The Patriot (Antony Starr), Soldier Boy and Stormfront (Aya Cash) are far worse. On this, watch ‘The Boys’ and the crazy theory about Patriota’s parents. Even the Deep’s malleable personality and naivete make him complicit in some pretty heinous things.
Lately, A-Train has embarked on a journey of redemption. It’s true that he was motivated by his selfish desire to salvage his battered career and stay relevant, but along the way it morphed into something genuine.
A-Train has been fighting for his place on Vought, as his powers have been hampered by his weakened heart (too much compound V does that to you)
His identity crisis led to a makeover with a great focus on cultural responsibility. This culminated in his quest for social and racial justice in relation to the violent Blue Hawk over-policing in black neighborhoods.
In an attempt to save Vought’s image, Blue Hawk (Nick Wechsler) went to a community meeting in one of the black neighborhoods he patrolled to apologize publicly and, of course, on television. The encounter turns sour, and in the ensuing ruckus, A-Train’s brother, Nathan (Christian Keyes), sustains an injury that leaves him permanently paralyzed.
This event and its personal implications turned A-Train’s dislike for Blue Hawk into hate. Not just because of what happened to Nathan, but because of who Blue Hawk was, what he had done, and the racist beliefs he held.
Later, A-Train got even during ‘Herogasm’, one of the 10 best episodes of ‘The Boys’ according to fans, when he took Blue Hawk out for a run, dragging him across the asphalt at high speed.
blue hawk’s death -although not entirely undeserved- it was beyond horrifying. It was penance at its finest and a physical representation of the rage A-Train felt for him.
But it had a cost. A-Train’s heart eventually gave out and the price to save him was a transplant of Blue Hawk’s own heart.
…….
The, a black man, has the heart of a racist. Too far, ‘The Boys’. Too far.
Giving A-Train Blue Hawk’s heart seems like an insensitive move to make him pay for his own crimes. like a smart attempted poetic justice that reads less like stanzas and verses and more like uncomfortable cruelty.
It’s not just the heart of a man he hatedbut someone’s who mistreated his people because of the color of his skin. Blue Hawk despised them and now that contemptuous heart keeps A-Train alive.
The mental and emotional impact it can cause will not be easy to remedy. It goes beyond Black Hawk and the acts of him. It is a constant reminder, that beats in his chest, of the injustices suffered by the black community at the hands of small-time people and ill will.
It is a squeeze of psychological pain minute by minute, second by second. It’s a mess, that’s what it is, and if that doesn’t at least make you cringe, you’re not capable of compassion. And that remains to be seen how Soldier Boy’s final twist in ‘The Boys’ prepares for a major reveal…
