Tati, Italo and Medina advance onto the Teahupo’o stage

Hosting surfing at the Paris Olympic Games, Tahiti will host the world’s surfing elite at the Teahupo’o leg of the WSL starting this Saturday (25th). The only Brazilian in the women’s competition, Tatiana Weston-Webb started the competition well and won her heat in the first round, advancing to the quarterfinals. In the men’s category, Ítalo Ferreira and Gabriel Medina won their series by reaching the round of 16, while Yago Dora will have to compete in the repechage.




Tatiana Weston-Webb was the first Brazilian to fall into the water at Teahupo’o in the first round of the women’s draw. Even with the calmest sea, the Gaucho found a good tube to score 7.67 points, as well as another wave for 2.67, for a total of 10.34. The score left Tati in first place in the heat, guaranteeing a direct place to the quarterfinals. In the repechage the Costa Rican Brisa Hennessy (8.16, with 4.83+3.33) and the Hawaiian Gabriela Bryan (1.53, with 1.00+0.53) will have to compete.

Italo and Medina win the heats

In the men’s category, Olympic champion Ítalo Ferreira won his heat to directly access the round of 16. Potiguar had 6.83 and 6.47 in his best waves, finishing with a total of 13.30. With this result, Ítalo sent Griffin Colapinto (11.47, with 5.77 + 5.70) and Mihimana Braye (11.66, with 5.83 + 5.83) to the repechage.

The sea was light at the start of the heat for Gabriel Medina, who usually surfs well in Tahiti. The three-time WSL world champion went more than 20 minutes without getting any scores. But in the final stretch of the heat Medina found two tubes, which however gave him 6.33 and 5.57 points for a total of 11.90. The score left the Sao Paulo native in first place in the heat and with a direct place in the round of 16. Vault’s Imaikalani (6.80, with 1.80 + 5.00) and Jake Marshall (2.20, with 1.20 + 1.00) advanced to the round of 16.

Yago Dora wasn’t as lucky, getting two low marks. With 3.97 + 3.83 Yago came third in his heat with a total of 7.80. Hawaiian John John Florence won the heat with 13.77 (7.67 + 6.10) to advance to the round of 16, while Indonesian Rio Waida went to the repechage with 9.60 (4.93 + 4.67).
