There’s another Gibson must-see in the desert wilderness. If Mel Gibson played the legendary Mad Max, the anti-hero of the post-apocalyptic world imagined by George Miller, in three feature films, Colin Gibson works behind the scenes on an equally essential aspect of the franchise. In fact, it’s this former actor-turned-mechanic (!), Oscar-winner in 2026, that we have the impressive cars of Fury Road and Furiosa.
At the theatrical release of the prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, he spoke to our colleagues www.automobile-magazine.fr On his “Mad” motorized creation. selected pieces.
Specifically, tell us how you create a “Madmaxian” car?
Colin Gibson: The first step in producing Mad Max cars often involves scavenging abandoned cars or spare parts from various sources. Raw materials can come from cars, trucks, motorcycles, airplane parts, or even agricultural machinery, or even waste from industrial machinery. You know, everything has to be considered to create new cars. Each car is like a blank canvas waiting to be transformed into a monstrous mechanical beast.

After gathering the basic materials, we can begin what I call the modification process. This can include strengthening the structure with additional metal to create armor, installing rugged all-terrain tires for maximum traction on difficult terrain, raising the chassis and adding improved engine cooling systems in environments where heat and dust are a constant challenge. In short, the process of creating these rolling war machines is a mixture of restoration, reinvention and boundless ingenuity.
Changed and empowered, they represent an extension of their identity and ability to survive in this hostile world.

Why do cars play a crucial role in the “Mad Max” saga?
Because people find themselves in a post-apocalyptic world where resources are scarce. As a result, only the law of the fittest prevails. Cars become a symbol of this struggle for survival and dominance. Changed and empowered, they represent an extension of their identity and ability to survive in this hostile world. And since the roads are often the scene of fierce battles between rival factions, they become weapons in their own right. They are used to chase, attack and protect other heroes!
This idea comes from George Miller, who has a limitless imagination

What’s the craziest thing you’ve done?
George wanted to create a degenerate character. A man who managed to survive in this crazy world despite being blind. There was only a guitar next to him. The artist Iota embodied this character. We put it on a car that was going full speed, surrounded by dozens of amplifiers, well protected! Huge sound system. This idea comes from George Miller, who has a limitless imagination. When he offered me this project, there was no script, but there was every script. The problem was finding a vehicle that could hold all that gear. We ended up with an eight-wheeler, an old military rocket vehicle. We then welded the old air conditioning duct sheets on top. The double-necked guitar, which is a real instrument, weighed 60kg and was supported by a piece of Datsun 1600 chassis! It can be used as a firearm!
