Fans of ‘Bridgerton’ know well that the series often hides important meanings or revelations in details that seem insignificant, such as the decoration of the sets, the costumes of its characters and of course in the dialogues.
In season 3 of the Netflix series, Cressida Cowper compares Colin and Penelope to Eros and Psyche, what was she referring to and what does it have to do with the protagonists? We explain to you.
In ‘Brigerton 3’ they mention the myth of Love and Psyche, what is their story?
Psyche was one of the three daughters of an Anatolian king and was so beautiful that her sisters were jealous of her and some mortals began to worship her instead of Aphrodite. The latter caused the Greek goddess of love and beauty to become jealous of the mortal.
To kill the young woman, Aphrodite orders her son Eros to make Psyche fall in love with the most horrible being in the world. The god of love, also obedient, prepares to fulfill his duty, however, when he tries to shoot the young woman, he is accidentally pierced, which makes him fall deeply in love with her.
So Eros decides to protect his beloved, builds her a castle with all possible comforts and promises to take care of her on one condition: she must live isolated from the world, they can see each other only at night and it is she was forbidden to try to reveal her identity.
Psyche seems happy with the arrangement but, at one point, she meets her sisters and they, out of jealousy, begin to question that she does not know her lover’s identity, which causes Psyche to begin to doubt the person . with whom she spends her time.
Eventually, Psyche becomes pregnant by Eros. Although they are both happy with this news, he made her promise not to tell anyone about it until the baby is born, since only then can he be a god. She says she will, but as a last wish before giving birth, she asks to see her sisters again before the pregnancy becomes apparent.
In that second meeting, Psyche’s sisters question her again about the man she lives with, making her question her intentions once again.
That night, returning home, Psyche lights an oil lamp to see the face of her lover. Although he is initially excited to discover that he is Cupid, he looks around his room and accidentally spills a drop of oil on the god, causing him to wake up in a daze. This, in turn, causes Psyche to shoot herself with an arrow from him.
After this fateful meeting, she falls even more in love with him, but Eros is so angry and disappointed by his beloved’s betrayal that he abandons her and causes the castle they shared to disappear.
In revenge, Psyche makes her sisters believe that the god wanted to marry them and leads them to a fatal destiny.
Similarities between the story of Colin and Penelope and the myth of Love and Psyche
Although the intention of the creators to compare the story of Colin and Penelope with the myth of Cupid and Psyche is unknown, the truth is that there are some similarities between the two.
First, it should be noted that “Pena”, like Psyche, is the youngest sister of three children and is usually despised or mistreated by the elders.
Similar to Cupid, Colin was supposed to help Penelope find a husband in “Bridgerton” season 3, however, he ends up falling for her.
It is also worth noting that the myth of Love and Psyche is often used to refer to the battle between mind and heart in romantic settings. At the end of the first part of season 3, “Lady Whistledown” addresses this issue while “Polin” finally gets his moment of passion.
Additionally, several fans have pointed out that many nods to the myth of Greek love can be found throughout ‘Bridgerton’ season 3. For example, the scene in which they kiss for the first time is very similar to a painting in which Psyche enters the garden of Eros.
Additionally, when they are subtly conversing in a marketplace, a sculpture of Eros and Psyche is seen.
