With an investment of R$3 billion, Stellantis will produce the Citroën Basalt SUV-coupe in 2024 and will have a new car at the Porto Real plant
Summary
Stellantis has announced an investment in the Porto Real (RJ) factory, where Aircross and C3 come from – and where the future Basalt will also come from – and we bet that the fourth model in the factory will be a model from another brand…
Stellantis detailed, this Monday (27), something more about the investment package that will allocate R$ 32 billion to Brazil in the coming years.
This time the car manufacturer received at the Porto Real plant, in Rio de Janeiro, the authorities to announce an investment of R$ 3 billion in the Rio de Janeiro plant responsible for the production of French cars. Citroën AND Peugeot.
The news is that the factory will have a new model from another brand.
As we know, Stellantis is unifying its giant facility in the country to optimize production and costs. For example, the carmaker announced last week its investment in the Betim (MG) engine factory, where Fiat models come from.
There the group will install a new line of engines that will come from Europe, which had been decommissioned. This line, already ready for electrification, will produce flexible hybrid engines for all Stellantis brands.
Next is the Citroën Basalt
As we said in Automotive Journal In recent days Stellantis has already started making some changes to the Porto Real plant. For example, the automaker has stopped producing the Peugeot 2008, which will soon have a new generation, this time imported from Argentina. Furthermore, the group will soon end production of the veteran 1.6 flex engine, still available on the C3 and 208 versions.
Because, with the end of the old 1.6, all Citroën and Peugeot cars will begin to use mechanical groupsets (hybrid and flex) of Fiat origin.
That’s why the new Aircross arrived six months ago with just the 1.0 turboflex engine with 130 HP and 20.4 kgfm of maximum torque and a CVT automatic gearbox that simulates 7 gears. And so it will be with the Basalt SUV-coupe, the third model of the C-Cubed family, whose production in Porto Real will begin in the second half of 2024.
