“Avatar” has four sequels slated between 2022 and 2028, and James Cameron now says he may not be directing all of the films.
With “Avatar: The Way of Water” hitting theaters later this year, conversations about the franchise are intensifying. Recently, in fact, details have been revealed on the characters of Kate Winslet and Sigourney Weaver.
Now, James Cameron said in an interview with Empire that he may not finish what he started in “Avatar”. Plans call for the franchise to have a total of five films and the third has already gone into production. However, the fourth and fifth have not yet been fully approved and it could be that Cameron is not responsible for them.
“The ‘Avatar’ movies of their kind completely consume me. I also have some other things I’m developing that are exciting, ”Cameron said. “I think in the end, I don’t know if after the third or fourth, I’ll want to pass the baton to a director I trust takes control, so I can do other things that interest me as well. Or maybe not. I do not know.”
So Cameron seems unsure what he wants in the future when it comes to the “Avatar” franchise. The third film, still untitled, is scheduled for December 2024. The fourth and fifth will arrive in 2026 and 2028 respectively.
“Avatar: Water Path” will be released in theaters on December 16, 2022.
