The PRF seizes a drug shipment hidden among donations on BR-116

The suspects tried to disguise more than seven kilos of skunk and hashish among blankets and food for the homeless

The Federal Traffic Police (PRF) seized more than seven kilos of drugs during the stop of a car on BR-116, in Guaíba, in the early hours of this Sunday (26). The vehicle, coming from Uruguay, was carrying donations presumably intended for people left homeless by floods in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The occupants of the car, a 29-year-old Brazilian and a 57-year-old Uruguayan, were arrested red-handed.

Details of the seizure:

The PRF investigation revealed suspicions about a Fox model vehicle, registered in Jaguarão, which was carrying a small load of donations. Inside a suitcase, hidden between blankets and food, police found more than seven kilos of skunk and hashish.

According to delegate Gabriel Borges, head of the 3rd Drug Trafficking Investigation Station, a kilo of these drugs can cost up to R$30,000, depending on the quality. The value of the seized cargo amounted to over R$100,000.

Criminal strategy:

PRF reported that due to the rain’s damage to drug trafficking, criminals have been looking for new ways to transport illicit substances. Since the onset of the climatic events in Rio Grande do Sul, the PRF has strengthened its intelligence sector to anticipate and intercept trafficking attempts.

Results of operations:

So far, the PRF’s actions have led to the seizure of 5.2 tons of marijuana and 66.2 kilos of cocaine, destined for the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. In two cases the drugs were hidden in the vehicles transporting the donations.

Consequences and donation:

The car and drugs were seized by the PRF, while the blankets and food that served as a facade will be donated to the homeless.

The approach exemplifies the ongoing need for law enforcement vigilance and intelligence, especially in times of crisis, when criminals may seek to exploit vulnerable situations for illicit purposes.
