Among the top 10 most watched feature films by subscribers of the Netflix platform this week, we find Paranoiak, a relatively unknown and quite effective thriller directed by DJ Caruso and starring Shaa LaBeouf in 2017.
- Tonight on Netflix: This role made Daniel Craig James Bond!
Rear Window remake?
Loosely inspired by Rear Window, a true cinema classic that is undoubtedly among the greatest films of the legendary Alfred Hitchcock, Paranoiac follows the misadventures of young Calle, who is forced to stay at home in an affluent American suburb.
When his mother decides to cut off his internet access, he grabs a pair of binoculars and starts spying on her neighborhood to occupy his long days. Then he discovers that the mysterious occupant of the house across the street may be… a serial killer.
Unlike the hero of Hitchcock’s feature film, played by James Stewart, who is locked in his apartment because of a broken leg, the hero of Paranoid is fitted with an electronic bracelet and placed under house arrest for three months.
Shia LaBeouf’s first major role
He is played by a very young Shia LaBeouf, who we have already seen in supporting roles (opposite Will Smith in I, Robot or Keanu Reeves in Constantine) and who here plays his first leading role before his career was sure to take off. Saga of Transformers and Indiana Jones.
Much more modest and less ambitious than the cinematic monument it claims to be, Paranoiac remains a pleasant and effective piece of entertainment, with an honest AlloCiné audience rating of 3.42 out of 5 stars.
Produced by Steven Spielberg and Ivan Reitman, it’s a good one if you’re looking for a good little thriller to enjoy with your friends tonight on Netflix.
