BYD Explorer nº1, a giant ship from the Chinese automaker, arrived in Brazil loaded with cars for the first time. The idea is to avoid new taxes on imported goods
BYD has ordered in early 2024 a own ship to speed up exports of its cars produced in China and, therefore, avoid major problems in obtaining ships from other companies. This week, BYD Explorer No. 1 made its maiden voyage to Brazil, bringing 5,459 hybrid and electric cars. And it was no wonder.
The Chinese automaker knows that, from July onwards, the tax rate on electrified cars imports will increase again in Brazil. He then took advantage of the cargo capacity of his giant ship to fill the ship with his cars and escape the new taxation.
The BYD ship arrived at the port of Suape, Pernambuco. Among the cars on board the ship there were “hidden” examples of the brand’s two subsequent launches on the national market: the King, “anti-Corolla” sedan.; and the Song Pro, an entry-level hybrid SUV.
BYD’s intention is to homologate all cars as quickly as possible, as Ibama has adopted the “Operation Turtle” and the issuance of the environmental license took longer than expected. It is worth mentioning that, in July, the import tax, which since January became 10% for pure electric cars and 12% for plug hybrids -in and read, will be reduced readjusted to 18%, 20% and 25% respectively.
What is the BYD ship like?
In addition to the enormous cargo capacity, the BYD Explorer Nº 1 has other very interesting specifications, which led the manufacturer to choose to invest in the vessel and, therefore, reduce rental costs.
The ship is 199.9 meters long, has the capacity to transport up to 7,000 cars at a time and has the autonomy to sail up to 15,800 nautical miles, which is equivalent to 29,000 kilometers. The range is sufficient to make a trip between China and the port of Santos, Brazil, as the distance between the two points is approximately 11,000 nautical miles.
The fuel used in the BYD Explorer Nº1 also reinforces the brand’s commitment to a more sustainable world. The ship is equipped with an innovative propulsion system that uses, in addition to conventional fuel, LNG (liquefied natural gas), which is not as clean as the energy of cars, but less polluting than the diesel of other ships.
According to Wang Junbao, executive of BYD’s corporate division, 7 more ships are expected to join the fleet in the next two years. Therefore, the manufacturer plans to incorporate its technologies to also have greener maritime transportation and, as a bonus, close transportation partnerships with other Chinese manufacturers.
