Last year, the Brazilian artistic gymnastics team achieved a historic result at the sport’s World Championships, winning six medals, including the unprecedented silver medal in the team final. At the Olympic Games in Paris, the team wants to repeat last year’s podium. And the key will be consistency, as coach Chico Porath revealed in an interview podcasts Double twist hablado.

Chico commented on the Brazilian team’s preparation for the Paris Olympic Games. The team must maintain the basis of last year’s World Cup, where Rebeca Andrade, Flávia Saraiva, Jade Barbosa, Julia Soares and Lorrane Oliveira. Before the Games, Brazil will undergo an acclimatization process where they will have a group of eight athletes, without a single defined reserve. “We know that in the all-around there are Rebeca and Flávia and we complete the team with the other girls. Now, with a missing piece, we need these girls to be ready. That’s why we want to take girls who are prepared in case we need them to compete”, explained the coach.
The laborious classification
In the main artistic gymnastics competitions, the first day is the most important because it defines who will have the opportunity to compete for each medal. Therefore, Chico Porath emphasizes that the Brazilian team must be consistent to compete well in the qualifiers. “I always tell coaches of other sports that gymnastics is very unfair, because the main day of the competition is the qualifications. Because that’s what will get you into all the possible finals. So, if you have a bad qualification, there’s no point after trained super hard sets and tested different things,” he said. The girls know this and are very mature for it. So we set up the series thinking of going to the final,” added the coach.
Chico’s expectation and dream is that Brazil will qualify well to secure a place among the finalist teams in Paris: “Now let’s work with the numbers. If we can get this main team and they compete well, we will be in the team and in the single”. My dream is also to get to the team final and, if possible, start in parallel, which I think was lucky. We can reach 167 points”. Last year the Brazilian team scored 165,530 points when winning the silver medal in the World Cup final. Therefore, 167 indicates a high probability of podium at the Olympic Games in Paris.
