The Brazilian reached the top 5 of the WSL rankings
Brazilian surfer Italo Ferreira won the sixth stage of the WSL, which took place in Tahiti, on the Teahupo’o wave. He beat the Hawaiian John John Florence in the final and rose to fifth place in the rankings, with an eye on the final which will be played in California.
Italo’s path to the title was spectacular and the victory capped a great day in the barrels that will host the Olympics in July. The athlete from Bahia Formosa scored 16.60, with a score of 9, against the American Cole Houshmand in the round of 16. He then played a Brazilian duel against Yago Dora and advanced with a score of 9.83 and a total of 17.83. The Olympic champion beat Moroccan Ramzi Boukhiam in the semi-final with a total of 13.27 and reached the WSL final with a bang.
Double world champion Florence also shone at the top and took the top spot in the WSL rankings. Her trajectory into the knockout stage began against local Mihimana Brye and, in a very close heat, she won by 15.77 x 15.63. In the quarterfinals you beat Rio Waida and achieved two scores above 9 points. The Hawaiian overcame none other than Gabriel Medina in the semi-final in a heat defined by two falls from the Brazilian in waves that would have been rated close to a ten. Fulfilling her role, Florence achieved a score of 9.77 and an 8.23 to reach the final.

The big decision left nothing to be desired and was emotional. Italo went all out and opened the competition with a score of 8.93. Subsequently the response was a nice greeting from Florence and a score of 7.83. Without feeling the pressure, the surfers remained inspired and the Brazilian achieved an 8.77 which won the trophy. Needing a near-perfect score, the Hawaiian entered a large pipe, spun on the way out and got a 9.2, just shy of the 9.8 that would have given him the win. At the sound of the WSL bell Italo scored 17.70, surpassing his rival’s 17.16.
