The new feature will prevent location history from being accessed via the web
This Wednesday, 5, the Google Maps has started to warn its users that, starting from December this year, the application’s Timeline will no longer be stored in the cloud, becoming available only on the device itself.
In this way, at least in theory, only the owner of the device will have access to the data linked to its location and the routes followed, excluding the possibility that Google or even hackers can find this information.
According to the portal Android Policethis will make the timeline no longer accessible via computer or in any web format.
The warning was given via email by Google. According to the message, December 1st will be the deadline to save the location record on your cell phone before deleting this information.
This should end the position history, a section of Google Maps in which it is possible to check the distances travelled, the stops made and other details on individual movements also on the web.
Furthermore, the application will offer an encrypted backup for those who want to keep track of the points traveled with their cell phone in hand. The option will only be available to those who want to save history; For those who don’t want to, simply let the deadline pass without taking any action to lose sight of the timeline. There will also be the option to automatically delete information after 3, 18 or 36 months.
To use the Timeline feature and activate your history, simply: log in to the Google Maps application, click on your profile photo, select Your historytouch the three dots and choose Settings and privacy. There you will be able to activate Location History, which will cause the tracking information to be stored on your mobile device.
Furthermore, in order to save data, you must update Google Maps to version 6.93 or later on iOS version 11.106 or later Android. This way, when the update is available, Google will send a notification via app or email to explain the news and guide the migration.
The objective of the new measure is to improve privacy conditions within the application. This way it is expected that fewer people will have access to tracking the location of a particular person, which, in turn, implies the possibility of greater security for the user.
