Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said Thursday that Hamas had not yet responded to mediators on the latest ceasefire proposal and was still studying it, adding that Qatar, Egypt and the United States were still looking for a solution.
Earlier, two Egyptian security sources said that negotiations to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip continue, but there are no signs of major progress.
The negotiations began on Wednesday when CIA Director William Burns met with officials from Qatar and Egypt in Doha to discuss a proposal that U.S. President Joe Biden publicly supported last week. The president described it as a three-phase plan initiated by Israel.
On Wednesday, in an apparent defeat of Biden’s proposal, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said the group was calling for a permanent end to the war in the Gaza Strip and an Israeli withdrawal as part of the ceasefire plan.
After a week-long truce in November, all attempts to reach a ceasefire have failed, with Hamas insisting on its demand for a permanent end to the conflict, while Israel says it is ready to discuss only temporary pauses until the group’s defeat militant.
This war began after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which killed around 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli counts.
