Nutritionist Neide Rigo, one of the creators of Horta City Lapa, tells what happened
Wednesday 5 June Neide Rigo @neiderigo He went to look for edible herbs and flowers in the neighborhood community garden and came across a lifeless plot of land, completely decimated by the Municipality.
The day before, he had invited members of the neighborhood group to another action to take care of the spices, fruit trees and flowers planted with love in Horta City Lapa. It was a shock and sadness that soon spread throughout the neighborhood.
In the story below, published on his Instagram profile, Neide tells a little about the history of the garden, which was taken care of by many hands and also how the intervention took place, considered inappropriate by the inhabitants of the neighborhood and which raises the question: until ?
Fear and sadness define…
“#hortacitylapa has just turned ten and yesterday, a day for the environment, it received an unexpected gift from the subprefecture of Lapa: they cut everything, leaving only a few tall plants. They cut all the low vegetation and the medium sized ones. they were finished with citrus vines, garlic, costus, pineapple, cosmos, galangal, cherry trees, several elderberry seedlings, rose bushes, coconut trees, all the boldinhos, turmeric, purple sweet potatoes, all the chananas, etc. Many seedlings have already been grown.
At this time of year, when it is dry, the garden is not as attractive, but it has protected soil, with fallen leaves, flowers producing seeds, small flowers feeding native bees, yellowing turmeric leaves indicating harvest. In short, it is a rain garden, without watering, with perennial plants, which bravely resist this time of year. The day before, Sunday morning I had invited our garden WhatsApp group to a common effort: pruning correctly, collecting seeds, harvesting turmeric. There was no time.
I don’t know if any dissatisfied neighbors have reported mistreatment (read: lush urban forest), if the city hall’s external team has respected the order to eliminate every bush found in the neighborhood, if the plan now is to leave everything on the ground, without cover, no. I only know that they peeled everything, they didn’t even leave dry leaves to cover the ground. They left it almost as it was 10 years ago, when the place was a general waste disposal point. I remembered a post about Berlin, if I’m not mistaken, or another city in Germany, where wild bushes are not pruned to attract pollinators. Many people would call them neglected flowerbeds.
Our Sampa Rural plaque, donated by the municipality a long time ago, was stolen shortly after, we don’t know by whom. About 3 years ago, a woman set fire to part of the garden while she was resting.
Finally, let’s get together, make more signs, order another one from Sampa Rural and now wait for the right time to replant everything, around October, remembering that we have no water to irrigate. Thanks for the gift, City Hall!”
