Everyone loved Shogun, as evidenced by the audience rating of 4.3 out of 5 on AlloCiné. The new adaptation of James Clavel’s novel, following the 1980 series, has also been renewed for several additional seasons by FX, although the program was originally developed as a one-off mini-series.
“99.9% of adaptations are worse than the books they adapt”
Among fans of the series is a certain George RR Martin, author of the Game of Thrones novels. The writer, known for his freedom of speech, recently condemned the adaptation of his books for film and television. For the latter, 99.9% of adaptations are worse than the novels they adapt.
But among the 0.1% who respect the original material, George RR Martin cites the Shogun series. If he admits he was “suspicious” When the project was announced, the latter was still convinced by the adaptation proposed by the tandem of screenwriters Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo:
“I have to admit I was skeptical when I first heard they were making another version of Clavell’s novel.” he writes his blog. “But I’m glad they did. New Shogun looks great. Better than the Chamberlain version? I don’t know. I haven’t seen the 1980 miniseries since 1980. That was great too.”
George RR Martin retains control over the adaptations of his books
According to George Martin, this new version of Shogun would surely have pleased James Clavell (his successors involved in the production of the series would have expressed satisfaction in any case). This praise is all the more precious because the American writer did not hesitate to express his criticism of the adaptation of his own Game of Thrones novels.
Also, in order to avoid the disappointment caused by the final episodes of the cult series, HBO decided to involve George RR Martin in the design of new spin-offs, namely the House of the Dragon. He is considered a co-creator!
The first season of Shogun can be watched in its entirety exclusively on Disney+.
