The President of the Court stated that there is no legal or regulatory obligation, therefore each minister defines the criteria for participation in the events
BRASÍLIA – Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), argued that STF ministers do not need to be forced to make their agendas public, underlining that the magistrate cannot live “framed” and that there is a certain “implication” on criticism of the participation of members of the Court in the events. “There is no legal obligation, it is very regimental, so it is a criterion for every minister”, underlined Barroso, in an interview with the Roda Viva program on TV Cultura.
Ministers’ agendas became an issue after several magistrates attended private events, without publishing their agendas on the STF website. Among other events, the Estadao showed that a tobacco company with shares in the Court sponsored an event that brought ministers together in London.
Between May 25 and June 3, the Supreme Court paid R$39,000 in public money to a security guard who accompanied minister Dias Toffoli on a trip to England for the Champions League final. In this regard, Barroso defended that ministers have access to security, regardless of the event they participate in, public or private, stating that “there is no way to regulate the private lives of STF ministers” and that, “in the to the extent that there is society’s perception, everything can be discussed.” Furthermore, the STF president reiterated that the Supreme Court does not pay the travel expenses of any minister except the president.
During the interview, Barroso also stated that the bill annulling the plea bargaining is a political issue that must be decided by Congress and that it is not up to him to interfere in the debate. Barroso further adds that the award-winning collaboration “worked with the adjustments that Supremo imposed”.
