Do you like series that emphasize “girl power”? The MAX platform, which has just arrived in France, has introduced a new series to its catalog that the French can finally discover.
If you miss fiction like Girls, Bold Type, Derry Girls, Sex and the City or Veronica Mars, then this new drama about sibling power will definitely make you happy! The series, titled Girls on the Bus, is co-created by Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, Legacy, The Originals) and Amy Chozik.
The latter was inspired by a chapter in his book Pursuing HillaryA memoir in which the award-winning New York Times journalist covered Hillary Clinton’s presidential race and tried to highlight her relationship with other journalists who followed her campaign across the United States.
Of course, Girls on the Bus sets the story in a different America with new candidates for the presidency of the United States who are famous figures. The series follows four journalists with different backgrounds who come together for better and for worse while covering the US election.
TV series about female friendship
Girls on the Bus centers on Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist, seen in Supergirl ), a journalist from The New York Sentinel who gives herself body and soul to tracking this campaign, even if it means leaving her feathers behind.
On a press bus trip that allows reporters to follow the presidential candidates’ every move, Sadie befriends three competitors: Grace (Carla Gugino, seen in The Haunting of Hill House), an experienced journalist who works at an old house; School Road, Kimberlynn (Christina Elmore, seen in Insecure), a journalist for a conservative news channel, and Lola (Natasha Behnam, seen in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), a Generation Z influencer and activist who becomes a reporter for her networks.
“It takes place in the political arena, but above all it is a story of friendship and family, love, unity and connection at a time when we really need it”*Melissa Benoist (Sadie) believes.
Despite their differences, these women become a true family, and in the biggest series of their professional lives – the battle for the White House – friendship, love and scandal come first.
“These are four women who come from different backgrounds, different ideologies, different political views, different generations.”Carla Gugino (Grace) explains, “And because they’re stuck together on this bus ride in very tight spaces with very high stakes, they actually find a way to let go of each other and see what the other person’s point of view might be.”*.
The power of a brother
Despite their different backgrounds and diametrically opposed lifestyles, the four “girls on the bus” come together for a righteous cause that shapes their exciting profession, as Natasha Benham explains:
“They fight for what they believe in. Everyone is very determined and focused on things. What helps unite them is their search for truth, even if they do it in different ways. They want a better world and they want to give information to people.”*

Over the course of a season of The Girls on the Bus, the four journalists will face a number of professional, but also personal, obstacles (including some very frustrating ones that speak directly to America’s political issues). But what will allow them to move forward is this sisterhood, this touching and inspiring bond that unites them, according to Christina Elmore (Kimberlin):
“These are women who have found ways to live together, who don’t always agree on everything and who are not from the same place. But that’s why we choose this type of family, “that’s why we create this sisterhood. If we were the same, what would we need?”
In short, Girls on the Bus is a sparkling, inspiring and enjoyable drama that highlights the strength of sisterhood between female characters who break away from their stereotypes and discover various friendships and loves while leading demanding but exciting careers.
