Spoiler alert, this article reveals important elements of “Stranger Things” Season 4.
For the last episode of Season 4, Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, saw the big picture: Chapter XXL – in its length, but also in its scope – tragic trajectories for certain characters and an ending that sends the city of Hawkins into chaos. What we have to imagine is the worst for Season 5, whatever happens before 2024.
When designing this season, the duo was inspired by the classic Hollywood film – and often considered one of the best sequels ever made: Star Wars Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. Remember, the ending of this emblematic part is one of the most pessimistic and dark of the saga of George Lucas. The Duffer brothers wanted to replicate a similar tone.
The final shot of episode 9 – when Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and the gang watch over the town of Hawkins on a hill – is itself inspired by the final and mythical shot. The Empire will respond. “We knew we had to end with our characters in the back looking off into the distance as the cracks in the Upside Down send particles all over the city.Matt Duffer explains. We wanted to emphasize the notion of war and supernatural warfare for Hawkins.”
One of the final shots from ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ inspired the Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things finale.
For the co-creator, this season 4 will be defined by “feeling lost“. As in Star Wars Episode V, where the fate of one of the main characters, Han Solo, is uncertain, the fate of Max (Sadie Sink) also remains uncertain.
The aim of the showrunners was to create high stakes, paving the way for the fifth and final season. The Empire will respond Sets the scene for Return of the Jedi. Matt Duffer also cites The Lord of the Rings as his second inspiration:how Star Wars or inside Ბekhdi brotherhoodWhen they leave for Mordor, we want to know what happens next. This is the feeling we were looking for.”
He follows: “It wasn’t like that in the other seasons, where we were trying to finish each plot. Usually there is a threat that remains on the surface, but our characters don’t necessarily see it. Here they face horror. What will they do? How are they going to get away with it? What will the sequel be like? Those are the two movies that inspired this last shot.”
