Dark Matter is a series based on the book Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, a science fiction production. Now, the work is available as a series on Apple TV+ streaming and brings some real facts into a fictional narrative. Are you curious to know what they are? Read on how show it to you.
What’s real about the Apple TV+ series Dark Matter
First of all, it is important to know that, to write the book, Blake Crouch consulted Clifford V. Johnson, an expert in high energy physics, quantum field theory, quantum gravity and other areas of science. In this way, a story was developed in which a “box” transports people into multiple dimensions.
Schrödinger’s box of cats
In the Dark Matter series, Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) plays an astrophysicist who seemingly lives a wonderful life in Chicago, with his wife Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) and son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). However, everything begins to change when an alternative version of him kidnaps him and takes him to another universe, in which lives Jason (2), a rich and very wealthy man, who has practically everything, except his children and his wife. wife.
He then creates a box that allows him to access various realities and, in this way, he finds the world in which he marries a woman he loves and has children. So he decides that he wants to have that life and tries to switch roles with his other version of himself. However, he is dissatisfied with everything and, throughout the story, tries to return to his original world and closer to his family.
The box created by Dessen (2) was only possible thanks to the discovery of the principle of quantum superposition, a concept that was popularized in pop culture through the Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment. In it, the cat manages to find itself in a quantum superposition alive and dead at the same time, because inside the box there is a radioactive element, a bottle of poison and a mechanism in which it depends on the disintegration of the radioactive element to free itself the poison.
While the box remains closed, scientists believe the animal is in a superposition of the living and the dead. This thought experiment, based on scientific concepts of quantum physics, shows why Dessen (2) has access to infinite realities simultaneously and in this way can abduct his “self” from a reality in which he is married and lives a joyful life.
Multiverse in the Dark Matter series vs scientific theories
The series brings the idea that the multiverse is something real. In this way, the characters use their imagination to “create” the universe they want to go to. Then they use the box, because in it the entire multiverse overlaps in a quantum state, offering entrances to infinite realities.
The multiverse is a scientific concept present in various theories, however so far it has not been possible to demonstrate the existence of other realities.
Traveling to other realities is not yet real
There are members of the scientific community who believe that reality is a perception created by the human mind. Following this reasoning, if living beings did not exist, reality would not exist, because our mind would create everything. However, this is a discussion that unites the fields of philosophy and science. Furthermore, so far there is no conclusion.
It is on this theory that the series is based, since the box opens the doors to all realities, but our mind can only enter one of them at a time. So the work explains that to do this it is necessary to take drugs and allow the minds to enter a state of superposition without suffering damage.
