The characteristics of cinema mean that it is seen as a complete and inclusive art. This becomes evident when works from other art forms end up being adapted for the big screen after becoming successful.
The most common adaptations come from literature, video games, and comics. However, despite being less frequent, hit songs also become the target of film adaptations.
With this in mind, we decided to list 10 movies based on hit songs.
Films inspired by famous songs
The romantic comedy “Evidências do Amor” is inspired by one of the greatest hits of Brazilian music: “Evidências”, made famous by the duo Chitãozinho & Xororó. The film stars Fábio Porchat and the singer Sandy, daughter of Xororó.
In the plot, the couple Marco (Porchat) and Laura (Sandy) meet again after singing the song “Evidências” at karaoke.
However, after the breakup with Laura, Marco literally relives bad moments of his relationship every time he listens to the song.

Directed by director Sam Peckinpah (“My Hate Will Be Your Heritage”), this film is based on the popular country song “Convoy” by CW McCall.
Kris Kristofferson stars in the film as Rubber Duck, a legendary trucker who has an encounter with a sheriff. Tired of police corruption, he summons other truckers and starts a rebel convoy.

The comedy drama “Eduardo e Mônica” is an adaptation of the song of the same name by the group Legião Urbana. Composed by the group’s singer, Renato Russo, it is one of the most popular songs of the Legião and of national rock.
The film follows the relationship between Eduardo (Gabriel Leone) and Mônica (Alice Braga). With opposite personalities, the two fall madly in love.

Another film that adapts a Legião Urbana song for the cinema is “Faroeste Caboclo”. The song of the same name, composed by Renato Russo, is one of Legião’s most famous and loved. It was known for its long running time, around 9 minutes, and for telling an elaborate narrative.
The film follows the story of João de Santo Cristo (Fabrício Boliveira), a man from the northeast who arrives in Brasilia. He enters the world of crime, but falls in love with Maria Lúcia (Isis Valverde).

Despite its title, the musical “Mamma Mia!” It is not only inspired by ABBA’s song of the same name, but by many of the Swedish group’s hits. In fact, the film is based on the musical play of the same name, which is inspired by the band’s songs.
With an all-star cast, the film features Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård and Julie Walters.
In the plot, a bride (Seyfried) wants her father to walk her down the aisle. However, she doesn’t know who she is because her mother (Streep) never told her. She therefore invites three ex-boyfriends of her mother to the wedding.

Directed by Cacá Diegues, “Veja Esta Canção” is an anthology composed of four segments, each inspired by a Brazilian popular song from which it takes its name.
The songs are “Pisada de Elefante”, by Jorge Ben Jor; “Drão”, by Gilberto Gil; “Você é Linda”, by Caetano Veloso; and “Samba do Grande Amor,” by Chico Buarque. Each segment tells a love story that takes place in different locations in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Based on the popular song “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” by Arlo Guthrie, “Let Us Live” is a comedy directed by Arthur Penn. The film reflects on the hippie movement and countercultural ideals of the 1960s.
Arlo Guthrie plays himself and the plot revolves around his experiences with friends at Alice’s (Pat Quinn) restaurant.

Written and directed by actor Sean Penn, the drama “United by Blood” is his first work behind the camera. The film is based on the song “Highway Patrolman” by Bruce Springsteen.
The cast includes David Morse, Viggo Mortensen, Valeria Golino, Patricia Arquette, Jordan Rhodes, Dennis Hopper, Charles Bronson and Sandy Dennis.
The plot centers on two brothers: an honest, small-town sheriff (Morse) and a misfit, self-destructive war veteran (Mortensen).

With a plot inspired by the Christmas song “Last Christmas” by the duo Wham!, “A Second Chance to Love” is a romantic comedy starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding.
In the plot, the life of a disillusioned young woman who works as an elf in a Christmas shop (Clarke) changes when she meets a mysterious and charming man (Golding).
Directed by Paul Feig, the film’s soundtrack includes several songs by Wham! and George Michael (who was one of the two).

Directed by Karim Aïnouz, the drama “O Abismo Prateado” is based on the song “Olhos nos Olhos” by Chico Buarque.
Alessandra Negrini stars in the film as a middle-aged dentist, married with children. Her life, however, changes abruptly when she hears a message recorded on her cell phone from her husband, informing her that he will leave her and go far away.
