Were you born in 2004? So you celebrated (or will soon celebrate) your 20th anniversary this year.
If so, you probably want to know which movies are right for your age. It’s time to take a quick look in the rear-view mirror and discover which works made their mark at the box office or at major film ceremonies when you were born.
Look your way…
If you were born in March 2004 (or in the weeks following), chances are this timeless tune was the first song you heard in your life. Indeed, 20 years ago, in the wake of Christophe Baratier’s film, the whole of France resounded with the soundtrack of Les Choristes.
Number 1 at the French box office that year, Gérard Junot’s dramatic and musical comedy drew 8.6 million viewers to French cinemas in 2004, followed by the animated film Shrek 2 (7.1 million viewers) and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Azkaban, the third opus of the famous little wizard’s adventures (also 7.1 million viewers).
- choristers (8.6 million records)
- Shrek 2 (7.18 million records)
- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (7.11 million records)
- The Incredibles (5.4 million records)
- Spider-Man 2 (5.3 million records)
The Shrek sequel also won internationally, collecting Rs 928 crore and thus climbing to the top of the global box office.
Clint Eastwood uppercut
In terms of ratings, it was the moving drama Million Dollar Baby, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Hilary Swank, that was rated the most by AlloCiné viewers in 2004, averaging 4,403 out of 5 stars.
In this year’s top 5, we also find other important feature films:
- Million Dollar Baby by Clint Eastwood (4,403 of 5)
- Howl’s Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki (4,310 of 5)

- Never Forget by Nick Cassavetes (4,167 of 5)
- The Butterfly Effect, by Eric Brace and J. by Mackie Gruber (4,137 of 5)

The Lord of the Rings Triumph
As for the Oscars, of course, it was The Return of the King, the third opus of Peter Jackson’s famous trilogy, that won everything at the 76th ceremony, despite the fact that the film was released in theaters the previous year. With 11 different awards, this is simply an all-time record (tied with Ben-Hur and Titanic).
We remind you that the best actor statue was awarded to Sean Penn for the movie Mystic River, and the best actress to Charlize Theron for the movie Monster.
In France, Denis Arcand’s “Barbarians” won the César for best film and best director. Sylvie Testud was awarded for Stupor et Tremblements and Omar Sharif for Monsieur Ibrahim et les Fleurs du Koran.
