President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva once again criticized the base interest rate, the Selic. Speaking to Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto, Lula said those who promoted the party to lead the institution this week in Sao Paulo must profit from high interest rates.
The criticism came amid the PT member’s complaints that the focus of discussion in the national media is centered on the public spending review and tax plans drawn up by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad. “We are increasingly faced with a financial system that practically dominates the Brazilian press,” said Lula, in a press conference this Saturday the 15th in Italy.
“Nobody talks about interest rates in a country with 4% inflation. On the contrary, in Sao Paulo they organize a party for the president of the Central Bank,” he said. “Normally, those who went to the party must have earned money from the interest rate.”
On the night of last Monday 10th, the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), promoted a dinner in honor of Campos Neto. Around 70 people, including bankers, businessmen and politicians, attended the event, at the Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
In an interview before the meeting, Tarcísio said that only people close to him had been invited. “I decided, I’ll prepare dinner for my friend Roberto, with some friends, people close to me, who worked with us in the government,” he said.
