The Big Brother Brasil 24 runner-up spoke out about the racial controversy during an event in his hometown of Alegrete
Former BBB Matteus Amaral has spoken out about the difficulties he faced after the revelation that he used racial quotas to get into university. The Farroupilha Federal Institute (IFFAR) entrance exam cheating case in 2014 revealed that he had declared himself black to get a place on the Agricultural Engineering course. During a demonstration held on Saturday (15/6), in his hometown, Alegrete (RS), Matteus stated that reporting the crime of ideological falsehood is “evil”.
Statements by Matteus Amaral
“I confess that it is not easy to deal with everything I am going through now. Finally, there were some events that were things that evil people wanted to do… anyway,” Matteus said during the 8th Benzedores Seminar.
He took the opportunity to thank the support he received from fans during his participation in the reality show and after the scandal was discovered. “I want to thank from the bottom of my heart for everything I’m experiencing, thank all the people who do everything for me to make things better, thank God for this opportunity to be alive, to be healthy, to have my family and such incredible people around me,” he added.
Matteus blamed “a third party” for the crime
After IFFAR confirmed the fraud, Matteus spoke out on his social networks, blaming third parties. “Information recently emerged that, in 2014, I was enrolled in the Agricultural Engineering course at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology in Farroupilha under the quota mode for blacks. This note is intended to clarify the circumstances of this inscription and express my position on this,” he wrote.
“The registration was made by a third party, who made a mistake by selecting the racial quota mode without my consent or prior knowledge. I deeply regret the impression that I sought to take unfair advantage of this policy, which that was never my intention,” Matteus explained.
He concluded by reaffirming his regret and commitment to racial and social equality. “I reiterate my regret for any inconvenience caused and my continued commitment to being an active advocate for racial and social equality. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify this matter and apologize for any misunderstanding that may have occurred,” he concluded.
The case is at the Public Prosecutor’s Office
Recently the Public Prosecutor received a formal complaint of ideological falsehood against Matteus. The complaint was presented by activist Antonio Isuperio, who works at an international human rights institution. He called for the former BBB to be held criminally responsible and for the school to be investigated for negligence.
According to the penal code, making a false statement in a public document can result in a five-year prison sentence and a fine.
To further complicate the former BBB’s situation, it emerged on Saturday (6/15) that in addition to declaring himself black to get into a public university, he also illegally received money from the federal government. According to columnist Paulo Cappelli, Matteus enrolled in the Bolsa Permanência program, aimed at quilombola students, indigenous populations and those in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability, to pay for the Agricultural Engineering course at the Farroupilha Federal Institute (IFFAR ). To receive the subsidy, Isabelle Nogueira’s boyfriend filled out a form declaring that his per capita family income did not exceed 1.5 minimum wage, accepted by the Ministry of Education at the time.
In addition to Matteus, his mother, Luciana Amaral, also declared herself black to attend the same university.
