Inside Amazon’s giant 25 meter screen

Cinema is always connected to technology and few things represent this as much as Amazon’s new studio. The Stage 15 has an LED screen 25 meters in diameter and can make scenes instantly come to life. OR was in Los Angeles to exclusively visit the studio and understand the use of the AWS cloud in Prime Vídeo productions.

The technology used in the studio is that of the volume, present in series such as “The Mandalorian”, for example, and consists in the use of LED panels instead of the chroma key and real sets. But you can’t get a sense of how impressive it can be without being inside.

What is Amazon Stage 15 like?

Stage 15 changes completely, from the walls to the ceiling, in a few seconds, and allows you to go from a western future to a post-apocalyptic future. Amazon guarantees that this speeds up filming, as it is more interactive for actors and directors. This is easy to assume, since the chroma key still depends on a good deal of imagination when shooting.

The technology also allows for less post-production, as most digital sets are ready during filming. Amazon also says that AWS will significantly speed up the delivery of images from within the studio to teams, further speeding up the entire process.

In demonstrations we saw its use go beyond the creation of simple scenarios. Volume can generate depth and movement, with infinite possibilities. The screen also interacts with the camera, bringing even more realism. In the example we saw, in a “cave”, the screen follows the movement of the camera, slightly modifying the reproduced image to adapt it to the shot. The idea is that this makes the footage more realistic and interactive, eliminating the impression that it is just a digital scenario. As the managers said here, the intention is precisely that no one notices the use of the resource.

The volume is not unanimous in the sector, in some productions it is possible to notice the presence of the resource and there are those who say that this will further limit the use of real scenarios. Like all technology, to work well you need to use it correctly, and what we saw in Stage 15 seems like an important step in this.
