Francisco questioned the use of the word “intelligence”
Pope Francis said this Saturday (22) that the future of humanity will depend on “technological innovation”, such as artificial intelligence.
The leader of the Catholic Church has repeatedly warned about the risks of artificial intelligence, a topic that was at the center of an unprecedented speech at the G7 leaders’ summit in Italy about 10 days ago.
“It is in the field of technological innovation that the future of the economy, of civilization, of humanity itself will be played out. We cannot miss the opportunity to direct innovation towards a configuration centered on the primacy of human dignity”, stated the Pope during a conference in the Vatican.
According to Francisco, innovations must “foster development, well-being and peaceful coexistence”, as well as “protect the most disadvantaged”. “And this requires a regulatory, economic and financial environment that limits the monopolistic powers of a few,” he added.
Jorge Bergoglio also launched a provocation and wondered whether it would be correct to use the word “intelligence” to define artificial intelligence.
“We must ask ourselves whether inappropriately using this very important, so human word would not already mean a surrender to technocratic power,” he underlined. .
