On their fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunn reports that his wife, Amy, is missing. Under police pressure and media panic, the model couple’s image begins to crumble. Very quickly, Nick’s lies and strange behavior have everyone asking the same question: Did he kill his wife?
Gone Girl, a film by Gillian Flynn and directed by David Fincher with Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris…
Ben Affleck gave it his all
Gone Girl is a bit of a magical marriage between Gillian Flynn’s acerbic pen and David Fincher’s sharp camera. While everyone praises the high quality of the film and Rosamund Pike’s performance as Amy, it must also be said that Ben Affleck has given his best performance here.
in the interview Commentary on the filmDavid Fincher praised Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Nick Dunn, a man who manages to get through a murder trial while being suspected of murdering his wife Amy, saying:It’s probably a lot more complicated than you think. He is wise as an individual, extremely brilliant, and very sensitive to the story and what happens in the story. I really enjoyed working with him.“
From the beginning, Fincher was looking for someone who understood the reality of life in the public eye and the many emotions that come with that media life. These are two key aspects of the film, as Nick becomes increasingly suspicious of the local, then national press. Fincher noted:His experience will not help this film. I was interested in him primarily because I needed someone who understood Nick’s desire for public attention and the absurdity of trying to defy public opinion. Ben knows this not conceptually, but from experience.“
Best for this role
You’d think most actors would be able to relate to the trials and tribulations of leading a public life. But Affleck brought a really special touch, a sad boy to a girl gone. She brings the right combination of sadness and silliness, making her the perfect opposite of Amy, who is always one step ahead of her. Fincher is full of praise for his actor’s perfect fit for the role of Nick:
“When I first met him, I said, ‘This is the story of a guy who gets his ass in a vice in the first act, and then the movie continues to tighten that vice for the next eight acts.’ And he was ready to play. It’s easy for someone to say, “Yeah, yeah, I’d love to be a part of that,” and then think, every day, “Really? do i have to be so stupid Should I walk in it up to my knees?’ Actors don’t like being forced to bear the weight of a joke. They go into business to avoid this. Unlike comedians, who have a habit of standing first.“
Gone Girl is available on Netflix until June 30.
