Billy Wilder becomes the subject of an unprecedented exhibition at MIS-SP

The exhibition will commemorate the career of the acclaimed director with immersive environments and screenings of cinema classics

The Museum of Image and Sound of São Paulo (MIS-SP) will bring an unprecedented exhibition dedicated to the great master of American cinema Billy Wilder. The exhibit, which opens Aug. 15, is designed to recall the striking dialogue, complex characters and refined humor of the director’s films from Hollywood’s golden age.

Selected films

The exhibition presents 13 significant films from the career of the Polish-born filmmaker, who would have turned 118 this Saturday (22/6). Included are classics such as the dramas “Twilight of the Gods” (1950) and “The Mountain of Seven Vultures” (1951) and the comedies “Sabrina” (1954), “The Seven Year Itch” (1955), “How Much Hotter Melhor” (1959) and “Se Meu Apartamento Falasse” (1960), as well as “Farrapo Humano” (1945), one of the first Hollywood films to address alcoholism, among other landmarks.

The films will be presented in chronological order, allowing visitors to follow the evolution of Wilder’s career. André Sturm, director of the MIS and curator of the exhibition, explains that the exhibition will highlight the relevance of each production and the diversity of genres explored by the director, who, unlike Hitchcock, did not specialize in just one type of film. Wilder was a master of drama and comedy of the most diverse styles.

Interactive experience

The exhibition will offer an immersive experience, with environments recreated to reflect specific settings and scenes from the films. The exhibition will follow MIS’s successful immersive formula, using original sets, technologies and objects from the recordings.

MIS’s previous exhibitions on Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock have attracted thousands of visitors. The new Billy Wilder exhibit aims to follow this success by highlighting a room dedicated to “The Hotter the Better,” where artificial intelligence will be used to recreate Marilyn Monroe’s lines.

In addition to the main exhibition, MIS-SP will offer courses, screenings of the director’s films and “Cinematographos” sessions, where films are screened with live sound.

The event aims to highlight Wilder’s versatility throughout his career, celebrate the director’s work among film enthusiasts and introduce him to a new generation interested in discovering the charm of classic films.
