The International Criminal Court issues arrest warrant for former minister Putin

The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday (25) issued arrest warrants against former Russian Defense Minister Serghei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov for alleged crimes committed during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In a press release, the Court accused the two of committing “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity” for the damage caused to the Ukrainian civilian population.

The judges concluded that there were “substantial reasons to believe that the two suspects are responsible for missile attacks carried out by the Russian Armed Forces against Ukrainian electricity infrastructure between October 10, 2022 and at least until March 9, 2023.”

According to the International Criminal Court, there is evidence to indicate that the offensives were directed against civilian targets and caused excessive incidental harm to civilians.

Currently, Russian General Gerasimov is still chief of staff, while Shoigu, then President Vladimir Putin’s defense minister, is secretary of the National Security Council.

The two arrest warrants bring to four the total number of senior Russian officials wanted for war crimes. The International Criminal Court has already called for the detention of Putin and Russian official Maria Lvova-Belova over an alleged plan to deport Ukrainian children to Russia. .
