Toy store Toys ‘R’ Us releases a short film created with OpenAI’s Sora AI, and the result mixes interesting moments with bizarre failures

Toy store chain Toys ‘R’ Us has released a video that uses OpenAI’s Sora artificial intelligence to tell the brand’s origin story. The result, which lasts about a minute, shows the tool’s potential for content generation, but it also has some flaws and causes some strangeness in some sections.

The short film entitled “The Origin of Toys ‘R’ Us” was made in collaboration with the Native Foreign agency and was presented at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2024. The material can be seen in full on the official Toys ‘R’ website . Our website.

Short film made with artificial intelligence

The film presents a dream version of the childhood of Charles Lazarus, founder of Toys ‘R’ Us, and the conception of the store and its mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe. In the short, a young Charles shows up at his father’s bicycle shop and, after falling asleep, is transported to an imaginary universe where he meets Geoffrey.

The narrative is presented as a dream, with toys floating in the air as little Charles sets up his shop. While it achieved its goal of presenting a magical and enchanting scene, the video features some known deformities of the AI-generated materials.

It is possible to notice, for example, defects in the movement of the boy Charles as he walks among the toys in his dream. The facial expressions and physiognomy of the boy’s face also demonstrate the use of the generative artificial intelligence tool.

To the Youtube, Toys ‘R’ Us released a teaser of the material, featuring the first 30 seconds of the short film. The full video can be seen on the company’s website.

IA Sora

The AI Sora, used to make the short film, It was announced in February by OpenAI as a solution for generating realistic videos from text commands. According to the company, “the model understands not only what the user requested in the prompt, but also how those things exist in the real world.”

Despite the potential of the tool, the availability of AI remains limited for select testers. In March, the OpenAI has released a series of artist-created videos from different fields, including designers and directors, who tested artificial intelligence and expressed their opinions.

The owner of ChatGPT promised that the Sora will be released in 2024 to the public, but there is no date set yet.
