Bahia beats Vasco, stays at home 100% and is vice leader

With a late goal from Estupiñán, Tricolor reached their sixth victory in six games at the Arena Fonte Nova. Rogério Ceni’s team reaches the top of the table

With a late goal and one more from the 14th minute of the second half, Bahia beat Vasco 2-1, this Wednesday (26), at the Arena Fonte Nova, regaining second place in the Brazilian championship. The match was valid for the 12th round of the competition.

Thaciano and Estupiñán scored for Tricolor, while Paulo Henrique scored for Vasco, who also played a decent game despite being one man down, when David received a red card.

The game

The first goal of the match arrives early, with Thaciano and a bit of bad luck on the part of the Vasco team. He received it from Everaldo and, from afar, shot to the right. Maicon tries to move away, but deflects the ball into Léo Jardim’s opposite corner, killing the Vasco goalkeeper.

In the 19th minute Vasco equalized with a spectacular counterattack. After a corner for Bahia, the defense heads it and the ball ends up in Adson. As against San Paolo, he quickly activated his teammate, coming close to scoring the future point.

Paulo Henrique, in perfect form, shoots from midfield and, alone, invades the area, missing the goal at the first attempt. On the rebound Vegetti protected, waited and touched Adson, who set up Lucas Piton on the left.

The full-back compensated with the assist, creating a perfect low cross for Paulo Henrique himself, who, as a centre-forward, did nothing but double the lead into an empty net. Lucas Piton’s last pass that led to a goal was in the fourth round of the Campeonato Carioca.

Bahia almost took the lead with a goal that could have earned them the Puskás Award. In a movement with quick touches to the center, Gilberto serves Cauly, who, without letting him fall, takes the vein to stamp Léo Jardim’s crossbar. In the next move, Cauly himself received a brilliant shot from Everton Ribeiro and made a sensational aim, but sent it beyond the goal by a few centimeters.

Second time

Both teams created good chances in the opening minutes of the second half. First Vasco, with a good run (also this one) from Paulo Henrique on the right. He approached David, who at first took it badly and sent it to him.

The response is in style, with a great action from Bahia on the right. Everaldo received it from Everton Ribeiro and served Jean Lucas. With a right foot, he kicks low and sends the ball very close to Léo Jardim’s corner.

The situation becomes complicated for Vasco in the 14th minute, when David receives a red card. Rafael Paiva had to change, fielding two more full-backs on the pitch, with Puma and Leandrinho remaining in the second row of four, with Vegetti alone in attack.

Bahia begins to accumulate opportunities, especially with shots from outside the area. In a moment of great pressure, in the 40th minute, it was the Tricolore who scored the winning goal. Luciano Juba invades the area from the left and shoots low into the center of the six yard area. The Colombian striker simply deflected the ball into a corner and gave the home team the victory, which remains 100% at the Brasileirão’s Arena Fonte Nova.

Next steps

Vasco is in 15th place, with ten points, one more than Vitória, which opens Z-4. Cruz-Maltino returns to the field on Saturday (29th), when they host Botafogo, in the São Januário classic, at 6.30pm (Brasilia time).

Bahia jumps to second place, equaling league leaders Flamengo in points – 24. Rogério Ceni’s team, in turn, will travel to the capital of São Paulo, where they will face São Paulo, again in the 13th round of the Brasileirão, on Sunday ( 30), at 4:00 pm.
