Between two Mission Impossible missions, Tom Cruise in 2017 fell in with Barry Sell, a rogue pilot hired by the CIA to carry out one of the biggest covert operations in United States history. Directed by Doug Liman, who had already directed him in Edge of Tomorrow, the film unfortunately did not leave an indelible mark on the minds of viewers.
The king of waterfalls
Still, Cruise and his team didn’t do things by halves in Barry Seal: American Traffic. Experienced and passionate pilots, the filmmaker and actor were hooked on using airplanes in the film…which they flew themselves:
Tom did all the flight scenes himself, he even flew one of our planes to Colombia. This is the type of plane that Barry flew. He made a 10-hour flight with little cuckoos. Liman revealed.
If the film offers an unparalleled spectacle, it would not have been possible without the scouting work of the team members. A dangerous piece of work, especially in hostile territory, after Barry Seeley was filmed near Medellin, Colombia. And the latter was affected by the tragic deaths of two experienced pilots who were responsible for shooting aerial footage and assessing the hazards of the scenes in question.
Mixed reception
Barry Sill received mixed reviews from the press. In France, the media gave it a score of 2.9 out of 5, criticizing the script’s incoherence and lack of tension, but still emphasizing its sense of spectacle. As for the audience, they didn’t respond at all.
If American traffic attracted 600,000 curious young people to cinemas – a very respectable figure – when we look more closely at the recognition achieved by Tom Cruise’s films, we get a rather disappointing result.
A true king of the box office, the actor rarely misses his mark and regularly crosses the one million mark in France. This is true of Mission Impossible, which fluctuates between 2 and 3 million viewers. The 2017 remake of The Mummy also crossed this symbolic threshold. Let’s not talk about Top Gun: Maverick and his heist in 2022 with more than 6 million tickets sold…
If, like many viewers, you missed Barry Seal: American Traffic, know that it’s leaving Netflix on June 30th.
