European Union leaders on Thursday chose German centre-right Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as head of the powerful European Commission, and Portuguese socialist António Costa as the next president of the European Council.
The leaders also chose liberal Kaja Kallas of Estonia to be the EU’s next foreign affairs chief, replacing Spain’s Josep Borrell. Charles Michel, who is stepping down as prime minister, announced the appointments via social media.
European Union diplomats said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán voted against von der Leyen and Kallas. Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni abstained from voting for von der Leyen and opposed the nomination of Costa and Kallas, diplomats said.
Costa will be in office from December 1 of this year until May 31, 2027.
