‘It’s an absolute masterpiece’: Tarantino might be the only one who thinks so of this forgotten ’90s classic

An insatiable movie buff, Quentin Tarantino never tires of (re)discovering and recommending movies. During his numerous talks, it is not uncommon for him to give listeners a very personal opinion on the feature films he likes.

Although we recently heard about M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable or Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, he was interested in Joe Dante’s legendary Gremlins and more specifically its sequel In his podcast The Video Archives With screenwriter Roger Evaris.

“It’s an absolute masterpiece.”

“I think Gremlins 2: The Next Generation is a masterpiece, it’s an absolute masterpiece. It’s the best transformation of Mad Magazine into a movie.”– he said, referring to the famous American satirical magazine.

The 1990 sequel to Gremlins, directed by Joe Dante, was a true commercial failure internationally, barely grossing $42 million (for a $50 million budget).

While it was better received in France, enjoying a fairly decent audience rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars on AlloCiné, it never achieved the status of its predecessor.

Much crazier and sometimes a bit messy, it followed the new adventures of Bill and Kate as they battled a second invasion of gremlins in a New York skyscraper.

In the building of the genetic research laboratories, the creatures this time took on alternative forms, surprising to say the least, and so the film introduced an intelligent gremlin (and gifted with speech), a female gremlin, a spider gremlin and even… .a factory gremlin!

Tarantino, a fan of the novel Gremlins 2!

Outside of the movie, Quentin Tarantino is also a big fan of his novel adaptation, as he explained on his podcast between bursts of laughter:

“Something like this was done in the film as a novel. In the novel, gremlins attack the novelist. They come, attack, snatch the novel, lock it in a closet, and the leader of the gremlins continues to work on writing a three-page manifesto until the author escapes, hunts down the gremlins, and finishes his book.
