Scientists find out which type of paper is most likely to cause a cut

A Danish study group tested different types of paper to figure out which might be the most painful

Scientists have discovered what is the most dangerous type of paper when it comes to educated. Research conducted at the Technical University of Denmark, published in Physical Review AndHe points out that a 65 micrometer thick paper is the worst in these cases.

“I got a lot of paper cuts and, frankly, they started to annoy me,” study co-author Kaare Jensen tells NewScientist.

Jensen failed to find the root cause of paper cuts in existing scientific studies, as most focused primarily on the risk of infection.

Therefore, he and his colleagues decided to create a new experiment. The scientists collected different types of paper, with different thicknesses. Including toilet paperprinted magazines, office paper, pages of booksbusiness cards and printed photos.

They then created a small robot that pushed different paper samples onto the gelatin from various angles to simulate an “attack” with the paper.

The study group’s videotaped tests show that there is some degree of danger when paper about 65 micrometers thick approaches gelatin at an angle of 15 degrees. This type of paper is used in dot matrix printers and in printed scientific journals.

At NewScientist, Jensen says that what makes cutting this type of paper so painful is its thickness.

It’s not so thin that it bends and warps when it comes into contact with gelatin (or a hand, in this case). However, it is not so thick that it cushions the impact due to the pressure distributed on the paper.

The findings inspired the researchers to create a knife with a blade made from recycled paper, which was most effective when it was 65 micrometers thick. The “Paper Machete” could cut apples, cucumbers and even chicken, as long as it wasn’t too wet.
