Operation Engodo Dismantles Group That Faked Master’s and Doctorate Degrees
This Friday, the Federal Police carried out Operation Engodo, with the aim of dismantling a criminal group specialized in the forgery of master’s and doctoral degrees, improperly using the name of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
Federal Police agents executed two search and seizure warrants in Porto Alegre, issued by the Federal Court. During the operation, one of the suspects was arrested for using a false document and illegally practicing his profession in a beauty clinic in the Farroupilha neighborhood. The action was supported by the Biomedicine and Dentistry Councils.
Investigations showed that the group not only forged UFRGS diplomas, but also promised to revalidate diplomas obtained in foreign institutions, such as in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and the United States.
The criminals mainly targeted public employees interested in obtaining additional qualifications, asking for approximately R$ 7,000.00 per counterfeit diploma, which was then presented to municipal, state and federal public entities.
The Federal Police estimates that the group has created more than two thousand fake master’s degrees, doctorates, postgraduate degrees, specializations and other degrees.
If convicted, the individuals involved could be held responsible for the crimes of abusive practice of the profession, use of false documents and criminal association.
