“Gladiator” is one of the great classics of cinema and, even today, more than two decades after its debut in 2000, it is still remembered for its quality. The sequel to the franchise, “Gladiator 2,” is set to hit the big screen later this year.
The film is confirmed to premiere in Brazil on November 14, 2024. The cast will include Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Barry Keoghan, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger. Ridley Scott, who directed the first feature film, returns to direct the sequel.
The events of “Gladiator 2” will take place 25 years after the story of the first film. Mescal will play the protagonist Lucius, son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla, who appears in the 2000 film as a child.
The story begins with Lucius living as a young adult in the region of Numidia in North Africa, where his mother sent him as a child because it was beyond the reach of the Roman Empire. Events bring Lucius back to Rome as a gladiator, where he makes new enemies and is reunited with his mother.
Pedro Pascal will play Marcus Acacius, a Roman general trained under the command of Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russell Crowe, from the original film), Denzel Washington will play Macrinus, a wealthy power broker in Rome who maintains a stable of gladiators for sport.
Paul Mescal underwent a physical transformation for the film
Mescal has grown so much that Pascal said it was a big challenge to face him in the arena. He even gave Mescal a nickname on set: “Brick Wall Paul.”
The lead actor also spoke about how he had to focus on transforming his body into something that would convince him that he was a time warrior and that he looked like nothing else.
“I also think that sometimes someone can, when they’re trying to find the perfect look, end up looking more like an underwear model than a warrior,” Mescal said.
