“The Almighty Cronenberg”: After 25 years, this iconic sci-fi film of the 90s returns to the cinema.

What is it about?

In the near future, genius developer Allegra Geller has invented a new generation of games that directly connects to the nervous system: eXistenZ. During the presentation of the game, a fanatic tries to kill him. A young marketing intern, Ted Pikul, saves Allegra’s life. The brutal chase involves both reality and the murky and mysterious world of the game.

Remarkable piece! If we know the name of David Cronenberg, a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, and to whom we owe the cult horror film “The Fly”, this film, which opens in theaters today, is not at all his most famous work, and that’s a shame!

25 years ago, the Canadian director continued to explore the theme of the body, as he knows how to do so well, with a fascinating and oppressive film about the relationship between reality and virtual, dreams and nightmares. An avant-garde film with themes that hit home today combines the real and the virtual. Indirectly, eXistenZ allows us to question what we call artificial intelligence today because, indirectly, it raises the question of the dangerous connections between humans and machines, with a film that is above all entertaining and interesting.

The film, which is restricted to children under the age of 12, was screened in competition at the Berlin Film Festival and won the Silver Bear.

WalkthisWay (4.5/5):For me, this is Cronenberg’s best film, complex, disturbing, unhealthy, fascinating.

eXistenZ hits theaters this Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

We remind you that David Cronenberg’s new film will be released in early 2025: The Shrouds. Just two years after Future Crimes, David Cronenberg returned to Cannes this past May with this sci-fi film starring Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger. It will be released in France on January 22, 2025.
