New feature shows a TV presenter trying to boost his show’s ratings with a live demonic possession; read the review
In 1999, The Blair Witch Project took horror fans by surprise with a fictional story, but one so full of truth that many believed that three young people had actually gotten lost in a Maryland forest while filming a documentary about a local urban legend.
Years later, films like Paranormal activity (2007), [Rec] (2007) and Cloverfield: Monster (2008) made a similar impact and helped cement the subgenre found footage as one of the most popular in horror. He is the one who inspires Interview With The Devilwhich hits Brazilian cinemas starting this Thursday, July 4th.
What is the story of Interview with the Devil?
Starring David Dastmalchianin Dune (2021) and The Suicide squad (2021), Interview With The Devil accompanies Jack Delroya presenter of a talk show television, which is trying its best to recover its audience after being away from TV because of the death of its wife (Georgina Haig, era uma vez).
On Halloween night in 1977, he decides to play his final card and invites a medium, who promises to communicate with the dead (Fayssal Bazzi, PEGO); a skeptic, who claims to be able to unmask any charlatan (Ian Bliss, Matrix Revolutions); and the big attraction of the night, Lilly (Ingrid Torelli, Five Rooms), a girl who supposedly lives with a demon inside her.
With the help of the girl’s guardian, Dr. June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon, Saw V), Jack wants to try to perform a demonic possession on the stage of his show. However, the situation gets out of his control and becomes dangerous for everyone present, but especially for the presenter, who sees his secrets revealed to the whole world. Watch the trailer:
What do we think of Interview With The Devil?
Mix of mockumentary with found footage, Interview With The Devil uses a narrative language that harks back to old programs true crime as Dateline or, in Brazil, Direct lineand delivers a great horror film, almost perfect.
While staying within its proposal, the film is intriguing and holds the viewer’s attention by building the expectation that, even if the situation seems to have reached its limit, it can always get worse, considering that the ending is always (or, at least, should be) the cherry on the cake of any film.
In an hour and a half long runtime, the film presents a growing suspense and shocking sequences. It is even possible to forgive the behind-the-scenes scenes of the program, which are inserted during the breaks and serve only to break the proposal of the film, even if momentarily, stripping it of its supposed veracity.
However, disaster strikes in the final minutes of the film, when Interview With The Devil completely abandons its narrative to over-explain itself — something completely unnecessary at this point.
Throwing clues here and there, the script elucidates, throughout the film, what Jack Delroy had done to get to that moment, without the need to chew the story over for the audience. When it does this, the film underestimates its own intelligence, dumbing itself down. If it had ended in the final scenes of the program, in its most shocking sequence, Interview With The Devil it would be perfect.
Someone was missing to say that the brothers’ script Colin It is Cameron Cairnesalso responsible for directing the film, was good enough to speak for itself, without being misunderstood or negligent towards the public.
In the end, Interview With The Devil It ends up being a great horror film, but it will have to live with the idea that, by a hair’s breadth, it could have been excellent and, unfortunately, it isn’t.
