Jacqueline StewartThe renowned film scholar and presenter of Turner Classic Movies has been named director and president of the Museum of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the museum’s board of directors announced on Wednesday.
Since 2020, Stewart has served as the Museum’s Artistic and Programming Director, leading the strategy and planning of the Academy Museum’s curatorial, educational, and public programming initiatives, including exhibitions, exhibits, symposia, publications, workshops, youth programs, and the Academy Museum. podcast
In his new role, which he will assume July 18, he will be responsible for guiding the vision and overseeing all aspects of the facility’s operation, which opened to the public last September.
He was the only former director and president of the museum Bill Kramerwho last week became executive director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

A native of Chicago’s South Side, Stewart holds a BA in English from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago, and has also studied moving image archives at UCLA and Cineteca di Bologna, Italy.
He is a professor of film and media studies at the University of Chicago, having previously served on the faculty of Northwestern University. He was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018, was a 2019 Senior Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), and was honored as a Fellow of the MacArthur Foundation in 2021.
Stewart was widely celebrated for the 2005 book Migration to Cinema: Cinema and Black Urban ModernityAfrican-American Studies and Silent Film and co-edited LA Rebellion: Creating a New Film Noir s William Graves: cinema as a mission.
He currently hosts “Silent Sunday Nights” at TCM and serves as chairman of the National Board for Motion Picture Preservation.
