Nintendo Won’t Use Generative AI to Develop Games

Nintendo president says company will not use generative AI technologies in game development, going against industry trends

Contrary to trend of many publishersTHE Nintendo I don’t plan on using it AI Technologies in Game Development. The CEO, Shuntaro Furukawasaid during a Q&A with investors in the last week of June that the company is open to innovation, but to the expertise of its creative teams cannot be replaced by technologies.

A creator of Nintendo Switch and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is one of the most successful video game companies in history and one of its differences is the way it treats its developers. One of the original designers of the first Super Mario Bros., Takashi Tezuka, for example, continues to be part of the company today.

“We have decades of experience creating great gaming experiences for our customers, and while we remain flexible in responding to technological developments, we hope to continue to provide value that is unique to us and that cannot be achieved through technology alone,” Furukawa said.

Nintendo Management Model

Even in times of crisis, the Big N has rarely resorted to layoffs and internal restructuring to balance the books. Different from what it was recently observed in Microsoft cases AND Embracer Group, which closed dozens of studios after massive acquisitions in consolidation strategies.

Meanwhile, the Japanese company uses examples of failures, such as the Virtual Boy and Nintendo Wii U, as learning platforms. By retaining your own teams of engineers and developers, it’s easier to identify the issues that led to hardware and game sales failures and fix them in the future without having to build and reframe teams from scratch.

Using generative AI can also save time and, above all, financial resources at the beginning. However, reducing costs by downsizing creative teams almost invariably implies a decline in quality standards and, above all, in the real capacity for innovation.

Despite the name “Generative AI”, it is basically just “replicative” of training, and probably wouldn’t be able to create titles like Paper MarioOR The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worldsgames that are even shot in the middle Nintendo’s most creative and innovative.
