During the meeting, NATO allies will reveal Ukraine’s “bridge to membership”

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies, meeting in Washington next week, will unveil a “bridge to membership” for Ukraine and announce measures to improve Kiev’s air defense, a U.S. official said on Friday.

“The allies will reaffirm that Ukraine’s future is in NATO, they will make significant announcements about how we are increasing NATO’s political and military support for Ukraine. This is part of Ukraine’s connection to NATO,” the official told reporters.

US President Joe Biden, seeking to remain a viable re-election candidate after his poor performance in the debate against Republican Donald Trump, will receive leaders of the 32 countries that make up the treaty in Washington on Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who last year unsuccessfully tried to secure a political invitation to attend a NATO meeting in Vilnius, said this year’s summit should resolve the issue of Kiev’s invitation to join the group.

The U.S. official described the “bridge to membership” as quite substantial, including coordination of training, logistics and force development.

“This is a very serious effort to put Ukraine in a position where it will be ready to assume its roles and responsibilities within the Alliance from day one,” he said.

Zelenskiy is expected to attend the summit.
