The German midfielder, who retired from football after Germany’s defeat to Spain at the Euros, apologised to Pedri
The day after playing his final game of his career, the defeat against Spain that eliminated Germany from the Euros, Toni Kroos, after all, took to social media to share a farewell letter. In an undeniably emotional message, the German midfielder recalled his reaction to the call he received from Julian Nagelsmann asking him to return to the national team in 2023.
“The first thought in my head was: ‘I’m not stupid!’. The first thought in my heart was: ‘Fuck, yes!’. As we all know, it’s the heart that decides.” Finally, he hasn’t forgotten Pedri either.

The 34-year-old apologized to the Spaniard, who was injured in the sixth minute of the first half of the quarter-finals: “I’m sorry and get well soon, Pedri. Obviously it was not my intention to hurt you. You’ll recover soon and I wish you the best, you are a great player.”

“My phone rang on 09/29/2023. Caller: Julian Nagelsmann. Request: Return to the national team. The first thought in my head was: ‘I’m not stupid!’. The first thought in my heart was: ‘Yes, damn it!’ As we all know, it’s the heart that decides. My first thought this morning on July 6, 2024: I’m happy that I accepted it.
I have always seen more potential in the team than it has shown in recent years. But I did not expect that it was possible, in such a short time, to have a real chance to win the title and be at the level of the best again! That is why I am so proud of what this team has achieved! And also all of Germany can be proud again. A special thank you to everyone who made this European Championship on home soil a special event. We saw, we lived and we felt you!
On a personal level, I would like to thank you for the very special affection and sympathy we have received in these weeks. It has been very special. And finally a request: now that Germany has found its favorite son, do not let him go! The journey of this team continues. And it is a great help if you support us even in difficult times! Because I can guarantee one thing: this is a group of great people who give everything to be successful!
Something that is still very important to me: forgiveness and a quick recovery for Pedri! Of course, it was not my intention to hurt him. A speedy recovery and all the best to you. You are a great player.”
