Why ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Should End With Season 4

Why ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Should End With Season 4

Let the Umbrellas rest (after maybe saving the world one last time, for old times sake).

Spoilers for ‘The Umbrella Academy’ below

‘The Umbrella Academy’ returned to our screens (and to the Netflix series catalog) with a lively dance in its third season, which shows that the series exudes an irresistible charm that other television proposals cannot even aspire to.

Absolutely wacky but with an enormous amount of heart, is one of the few series that would allow the entire cast of main characters to participate in a dance choreography to the rhythm of ‘Footloose’ and somehow get away with it without feeling too phony or contrived (okay… maybe a little contrived, but in a charming way, not confusing).

It’s also unique in its ability to repeat the same story over and over again, with just enough of a plot twist to keep it fresh and interesting.

That is why we expect the series to come to an end after the (alleged) upcoming season 4.

The fourth season has yet to be officially confirmed, but considering the series’ popularity with Netflix audiences, canceling it at its best without even a final episode seems unlikely on multiple levels. So for the sake of this article, we’re assuming that Klaus, Luther, Viktor, and Diego will still have adventures, albeit now in a strange new world where they don’t have any superpowers.

Although each of them (except perhaps Five) have not even wanted their powers at certain points in their lives, What the remaining members of the Umbrella dealing with “normal” life is a narrative path too tempting not to exploit..

While we reckon some (like Viktor) will prosper, it’s hard to imagine Lila and Diego suddenly falling into domestic bliss without the skills they’ve come to rely on so deeply, and with a baby on the way. And that without forgetting the possible death of Allison, who seemed to be in her own version of paradise at the end of season threereunited with her husband Ray and daughter Claire after losing control during the last batch of episodes.

We left the Umbrellas in a precarious situation at the end of season three, with everyone literally going their different paths in life.but with Earth (apparently, at least) free from the threat of extinction…once again.

But after three seasons, we know that won’t last long, and it would be weird if they broke with tradition now and the team didn’t join forces to stop another apocalypse very soon. Throughout the series, the family of antiheroes has been constantly haunted by the “butterfly effect”: the chaos theory that suggests that the smallest change could trigger a chain of events that have catastrophic results in the future. In the case of all three seasons of ‘The Umbrella Academy,’ this resulted in the apocalypse… so it couldn’t be more catastrophic.

In the first season, it was Viktor’s mistreatment at the hands of Reginald Hargreeves that ultimately caused him to explode, taking the world with him.. The forced suppression of their superpowers caused them to spiral out of control. When they finally exploded, so did everything and everyone in the world. It wasn’t meant to be, but this fact has become a small symbol of Elliot Page’s character’s transgender journey and evidence that, if placed in a more loving environment, Viktor had the potential to become who he really is. , with all the magic it has inside.

In season two, with the family scattered over a three-year period in the 1960s, it was Diego who finally set the next chain of events in motion.. Despite his best intentions to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy, he triggered a chain of events that led to a Soviet invasion. This was later prevented, but Viktor accidentally transferred some of his powers to the young fighter Harlan, who didn’t know how to control them and similarly almost blew it all up. Fortunately, they are once again able to stop him… but six people living in a time period that is not theirs proved to have even bigger problems for them in the future.

So when the brothers returned to their timeline to find that they had been completely replaced by Sparrow Academy, we can’t say it was a surprise. It also brought with it the arrival of the Kugelblitz, an all-consuming ball of light that is set to destroy their world. Saving the planet for the third time turns out to be the most difficult, and whether the results are really successful is still up for debate.. For now, they are in “a” world that may or may not be “their” world. It certainly is different.

Now, we can enjoy the gang going around this merry-go-round for a while, but there is a limited number of times you can stop the apocalypse without any repercussions. Currently, of the original six living members that we met at the beginning of ‘The Umbrella Academy’, not only are they still alive but they have added more members, which is impressive whichever way you look at it.

Ben is now alive again (albeit a different version of him), with the new additions of Sloane and Lila.. We still don’t know where Allison is, or if she’ll ever return, but considering Klaus’s superpower involves communicating with the dead, we can’t imagine her disappearing forever, even if she’s passed on.

With this development of the characters and their powers, the actual threat level has been reduced to almost zero, giving viewers almost no real stake in the game. The Sparrow Academy was presented almost as a version of the trope of the slaughtered lamb (something previously shown in Stranger Things) – A character introduced for the sole purpose of being killed.

Towards the end of the season, all but the new Ben (and maybe Sloane, who just disappeared) had been killed. But even if they’re dead now, they may still be alive thanks to an alternate timeline or a quick dive into the afterlife by Klaus.

So another apocalypse? Meh. It’s not the end of the world, it seems.

Based on the Gabriel Ba and Gerard Way comics from ‘My Chemical Romance’, the series has begun to deviate more and more from its source material. In his defense we will say that he was always more inspiration than adaptation.

In ‘Hotel Oblivion’, the third set of the comics, said hotel was actually a prison that housed criminals captured by the Umbrella Academy. In the series, it is a hotel created by Reginald that hides access to alternate universes. The Sparrows, who were introduced (and quickly eliminated) throughout the third season, didn’t even show up until the final moments of this third installment.

At the time of writing, the fourth comic book collection has yet to be released, so we don’t even know what the writing duo has planned for it. It makes sense for the Netflix series to come up with ideas of its own. But keeping this repetition risks sinking the series.. Therefore, we consider that it may be better if the series is a great success with four almost perfect seasons.

Screenwriter Steve Blackman has already said that this could be the case, saying in TVLine who created the series with four seasons in mind.

“I don’t know how many seasons they want to do [Netflix]. I introduced you to season four, and I know the beginning, the middle, and the end.”Blackman said. “When I started the series, I really only had four seasons in mind.”

He added that while the comics have plans to continue, he already has in mind how the series will end. As much as we love the Hargreeves, we hope Blackman can bring his plans to life.and not that the unnecessary extensions and stretched plots dilute its perfectly adjusted story.

Previous Netflix series like ‘Orange Is The New Black’ have a strange legacy of stretching the story out with unnecessary seasons that undermine good early seasons. Only a chosen few reach the level of ‘Riverdale’, where everything is so bad that it transcends. Let the Umbrellas rest (after maybe saving the world one last time, for old times sake).
