France: Projections point to a surprising victory for the left in legislative elections

The result, if confirmed, could thwart the radical right’s plans to rise to power.

Exit polls for the second round of France’s legislative elections show that the New Popular Front (NFP), a coalition of left-wing parties, has won the most seats in the country’s parliament.

The result is considered surprising after the radical right-wing party Réunion Nacional won a historic victory in the first round of the June 30 elections.

In recent days, the path to dominating parliament has become more difficult for RN leader Marine Le Pen.

Following their surprising success at the polls in the first round, French President Emmanuel Macron’s coalition, the National Rally, and the left have decided to join forces for the second round of the parliamentary elections.

The French parliament is composed of 577 deputies. To obtain an absolute majority, 289 seats are needed.
