House of the Dragon: Will Aemond Targaryen Die? Watch What Happens

Prince Aemond Targaryen, brother of King Aegon II and second son of Alicent Hightower with King Viserys I Targaryen, is one of the most interesting – and often one of the most hated – characters on the hit HBO series. House of the Dragonprelude to game of Thrones. How the series is based on the book Fire and Bloodby George R.R. Martin, it is possible to satisfy curiosity about the fate of the characters.

The following text contains spoilers for the book Fire and Bloodwhich may or may not be reflected in the series House of the Dragon (The House of the Dragon), from HBO. It also contains spoilers for the first few episodes of the series’ second season. Read on at your own risk.

It is worth noting that the series will not always follow the book exactly, with some significant changes already having occurred in the first episodes of the second season. However, if the production stays true to the events of Fire and Bloodbelow you can read Aemond’s fate. Further spoiler warning: Aemond and Daemon Targaryen’s fates are linked.

We have already listed here the fate of all the main characters of the series, according to the book.

The Deadly Duel

During the encounter, both warriors take flight on their dragons. Aemond, riding Vhagar, chains himself to his dragon, while Daemon, on Caraxes, does not. The battle reaches its climax when Caraxes attacks Vhagar from Aemond’s blindside, resulting in a brutal dogfight.

In a bold move, Daemon leaps from Caraxes to Vhagar and plunges his sword into Aemond’s eye, killing him instantly. Both dragons then fall into the water below.

And, according to legend, it was then that Prince Daemon Targaryen leaped from dragon to dragon. In his hand he carried Dark Sister, Queen Visenya’s sword. As One-Eyed Aemond watched in terror, fidgeting with the chains that bound him to his saddle, Daemon tore off his nephew’s helm and plunged his sword through the blind eye with such force that the point emerged from the back of the young prince’s neck. In the next instant, the dragons struck the lake, sending forth a waterspout as high as the King’s Pyre.

Daemon’s dragon, Caraxes, survived long enough to reach the lake’s shore, disemboweled and one-winged, where he died. Vhagar was found years later, with Aemond’s body chained to her, the sword still impaled on the young prince’s face.

Daemon’s body, however, is never found, leading to speculation about his fate. Although troubadours sang of the prince surviving the fall and living out his days far from the conflicts of Westeros, historians in “Fire and Blood” consider their survival unlikely.

It was the twenty-second day of the fifth moon of the year 130 C when the dragons danced and died above the God’s Eye. Daemon Targaryen was forty-nine when he died; Prince Aemond had just turned twenty. Vhagar, the greatest of all the Targaryen dragons since the death of Balerion the Black Dread, had counted one hundred and eighty-one years on the earth. And so went the last living creature since the days of Aegon’s Conquest, when twilight and darkness swallowed up Black Harren’s accursed thirst. However, so few witnesses were present that it would be some time before word of Prince Daemon’s final battle spread.

When will this happen in the series?

The exact timing of this event in the series remains unclear.

Given the number of major plot points between Jaehaerys’ death and the fatal duel, it’s plausible that showrunner could extend the story to keep the characters of Daemon and Aemond, played by Matt Smith and Ewan Mitchell, longer on screen.

Fans should be prepared for the final showdown once Daemon issues his challenge at Harrenhal, signaling the imminent demise of both characters. But I’ll say it again: HBO’s series in this universe don’t always follow exactly what George R.R. Martin says in the books.

New episodes of House of the Dragon debuts Sundays at 10pm on HBO and Max.
