This is one of the 10 superhero movies you must see in your lifetime: 13 years ago, it completely revived a franchise that everyone thought was over.

If you’re a fan of Marvel, DC Comics, or just a vigilante flying in tights, you’ve probably seen a little more than this. In any case, this subgenre of cinema (especially prolific in recent times), i.e. the superhero film, also contains, like Westerns or science fiction, some important classics.

A few years ago, journalists from the editorial team of AlloCiné were tasked with compiling them into one list with the aim of recommending 10 superhero works that must be discovered in the life of a moviegoer.

Alternating between big successful blockbusters and slightly more intimate projects, from 1978 to the present day, our ranking brought together the Avengers of the MCU, as well as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man or the excellent Unbreakable by M. Night Shyamalan.

There was also an important feature film that completely turned the tables on the already prestigious saga 13 years ago today: X-Men: The Beginning by Matthew Vaughn.

Released in 2011, in the middle of a particularly rich film year, this film followed the first three parts of the mutant saga and told us, as its name suggests, the origin of the famous X-Men.

Another generation of mutants

Let go of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in their iconic roles of Charles Xavier and Magneto, and make way for James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender to explore youth and first encounters… in the 60s.

With blistering pacing, brilliant writing, and a first-rate cast (McAvoy and Fassbender, but also Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, and Kevin Bacon as villains), X-Men: The Beginning has an intelligence opening in the same vein as the first. Part of the Saga: This chilling flashback in which baby Magneto is separated from his parents at the gates of a Nazi concentration camp in 1941.

An especially smart choice since the feature film, along with the creation of the X-Men, will also return to the young mutant’s revenge and terrifying memories that help explain how he became one of the most memorable antagonists. From Marvel history.

Even better: even though we thought the mutant saga was truly over at the movies (after all, the last feature film to date was called X-Men: The Last Stand), this fascinating prequel, not content with relaunching the saga, is also preparing to remember An extra-temporal reunion between characters from two generations in his next opus: X-Men: Days of Future Past.
