As Scorsese explained, X – The Mark of Death (2022) is “the 1970s, the slasher era,” while Pearl (2022) is “1950s melodrama in vivid, saturated color” and MaXXXine and the Hollywood from the 1980s, rancid, desperate.”
For the director, West did something “bold and utterly cinematic” by telling “three interconnected stories set in three different moments in film culture, reflecting on the culture at large.”

Prequel to X – The Mark of Death (2022) directed by Ti West, Pearl was a success with audiences and critics – and the film starred Mia Goth was exalted by Martin Scorseseone of the greatest filmmakers in the history of Hollywood.
During an interview with /Film, Scorsese gave his opinion on Pearlwhich premiered on February 9, 2023 in Brazilian cinemas, and also featured David Corenswet, Emma Jenkins-Purro, Alistair Sewell, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, Todd Ripponbetween others.
“The films of Ti West have a kind of energy that is so rare these days, fueled by a pure, undiluted love of cinema,” the legendary director said. “You feel it in every frame. A prequel to X – The Mark of Death made in a diametrically opposite cinematic register (think of the colorful melodramas of scope from the 1950s), Pearl creates a wild, mesmerizing, deeply – and I mean deeply – disturbing 102 minutes.”
West and his muse and creative partner, Mia Gothreally know how to play with their audience… before sticking the knife in our chests and starting to cheer. I was enchanted, then disturbed, then so restless that I had trouble sleeping. But I couldn’t stop watching.
